Acceptance of these terms

Please read these terms and conditions carefully: if you do not agree to all of the following terms and conditions for use of our content and products, please do not make a purchase.

Jericho Writers (referred to as “we” / “our”) are making our services available subject to the terms and conditions set out below. “This site” refers to and obviously affiliated sites, and references to “videos”, “content” etc refers to the video tutorials and related content (both free and paid) available on this site.

As a member of Jericho Writers, you have unrestricted access to a substantial amount of content including:

  • Our video courses
  • Our filmed masterclasses
  • Our cinema content
  • The data and search functionality of AgentMatch
  • And other services that we may add from time to time

We use modern and state-of-the-art technology to host, provide and secure these services, and will do our best to ensure that all our services are available as close to 24/7 as we can manage. When issues do arise, we will seek to remedy them as soon as possible, but can make no commitments as to how long or extensive any such outages may be. If we know beforehand of possible outages, we will seek to communicate them beforehand.

Monthly Membership: Renewal and cancellation

Your membership is payable via a rolling monthly subscription. We will charge your card or other payment method each month without prior notice.

You may cancel your subscription at any point, using the “Manage my Account” link on your member Dashboard. When you cancel, you will still benefit from our services for the unexpired duration of the month. (So, for example, if you pay your monthly subscription on the 1st of the month, and cancel on the 15th of the month, you will still have access to all our services until the final day of that month.)

We will never increase your monthly fee without your consent.

Annual Membership: Renewal and cancellation

As above, except that the subscription is annual, not monthly – and cancellation will still leave you with access to our services for the unexpired duration of your annual membership term.

Do note, though, that we will never increase the annual fee you pay for membership, for as long as you maintain that membership.

We work hard to ensure that the data on AgentMatch is up to date and accurate. All our researchers are UK based with at least graduate-level education. That said, the database is extensive, agents do move around, and some mistakes go uncorrected. We therefore always advise that you check our data against an agent’s own website and other published material, before relying on it.

If you do come across erroneous information, please let us know as we would like to correct it as soon as possible.

Editorial Assessments

We will keep your work confidential, period. We’ll make only such printed copies as we need to do our job, and dispose of those copies responsibly. If you want us to delete your file from our computer after we’ve completed the assignment, then just ask and we’ll do it.

The copyright of your work is automatically yours and remains yours at all times.

We will not seek to exploit your work or ideas for our benefit – but please be aware that many of our editors are professional working writers, who may be working with similar themes / characters / settings themselves. If we’re aware of a significant clash or overlap, we’ll let you know. What we can’t promise is that no such overlap will ever arise. At the time of writing, no client has ever complained about inappropriate exploitation of their work. We hope & expect that no one ever will.

Our feedback
We will deliver editorial advice to the best of our professional ability. The feedback will endeavor to strike the right balance between honesty, sympathy, and constructive criticism, but writers and manuscripts vary. What’s the right balance for one writer may not always be right for another. We’ll do our best to get it right for you.

Equally, editorial feedback is a subjective business. You are purchasing advice, not a formula for success. It’s our job to give good, clear, responsible advice. It’s your job to use that advice as constructively as you can. If you end up disagreeing with us, that’s OK. Disagreements can be constructive too.

Please note the copyright of the report remains with us. Permission should be sought in advance from us before quoting a report, for example to agents, or on websites.

Your responsibility
Even for writers with agents, publishers & book deals, editorial advice can be tough to take. We don’t compromise on honesty, and that means that you’ve got to be ready to hear it. If we don’t hear otherwise from you, we assume that your aim is to have your work published or sold commercially. If that assumption is not correct – or if there is any other background you want your editor to have – then you must set out all the relevant info in an email and send that at the same time as you send your manuscript. We’ll ensure that your editor has that background before they start work.

First-time writers tend to think that to break into the publishing or film industries you need to know the right people. Wrong! What you need is outstandingly good work. At least 99% of what we do is focused on helping your work come up to the right standard for success. When and if we achieve that, we’ll do what we can to help place your work with agents. But there are no guarantees, more’s the pity.

Mentoring / ongoing advice
We’re here to assist you for as long as you need us. If you work with your editor through one draft of your manuscript, and then want help with further drafts, ongoing mentoring, etc, then we’ll do what we can to assist. To discuss this process and arrange mentoring you should contact the office not the editor.  We are usually able to make the same editor available for any ongoing work, but can’t promise to do so.

For regular editorial work (eg: feedback on a manuscript, script or poems), your upfront payment will cover (1) a full and careful read by our appointed editor, (2) our written report, sent to you by email, and (3) a follow up telephone consultation and/or email between you and your editor. If you want to extend an editorial relationship beyond that point, you are normally welcome to do so, but further fees will be incurred.

We try to be prompt about giving feedback, but life can sometimes intervene with even the best laid plans. When this happens, we’ll do our best to be prompt and courteous about informing you of any delays.

Refund Policy / Complaint Handling
You have the statutory right to cancel within seven days of our contract with you. If you do cancel your order prior to work commencing, you will have your payment returned. If you are dissatisfied with the work that has been done, please bear in mind that the service includes a follow-up conversation/email aimed at answering any questions you might have, and addressing any other issues you feel are important. If, after having this conversation with your editor, you are still unhappy, give us a call on 0345 459 9560, and we will do all we can to make you feel we have fully honoured our obligation to you. We do not offer refunds if we consider, at our sole discretion, that the editorial report we have supplied has met ordinary professional standards for such work.

We strive to provide the best service possible and hope that you never need to read this section. However, sometimes things happen that may compromise our standards and we would want you to let us know about it sooner rather than later. Get in touch with the office, not the editor to discuss your issue. We will try to put right what has gone wrong. We promise to be fair and considered and deal with your complaint in a timely fashion.

That may include telling you things that are hard to hear, so please come prepared for that in advance – and do remember that our advice is only ever advice. You are not obliged to agree with it or act on it. If, for any reason, a particular book doctor fails to appear for a scheduled session, we will make all reasonable efforts to arrange for an alternative, other on that day or shortly thereafter.

General terms applicable to all products

Your responsibility
This site and its content, including its videos, are designed to be accessible by anyone with (a) a reasonably modern laptop, tablet or other mobile device, (b) a normal level of software capability, and (c) the skills necessary to use a site like ours on your equipment. While we will seek to be helpful if you encounter technical problems, we cannot help you with problems specific to your own device. For one thing, we don’t have the technical capacity to do so and for another, we can’t see your screen or the specific issues facing you. If you do have problems, please use a skilled friend or family member who can see your screen and suggest remedies.

Changes in the publishing market
Statements made in relation to the publishing and self-publishing markets are (to the best of our knowledge) broadly true at the time the content was produced. We will endeavour to update key videos and other content as and when the market changes sufficiently to render the old material redundant or misleading, but we cannot guarantee to do so in a timely manner. And, in any case, it is your responsibility to assess the market at the time you start to navigate it, using your own best estimate of that market, and recognising that our advice can only ever be one ingredient in your decision-making process.

All membership products will be delivered digitally. No physical delivery alternative is available.

Video content
The video content published on this site (including full-length courses, masterclasses, filmed interviews, short films and other content) have been prepared by genuine experts in their field and offer general advice in relation to writing and the publishing process. By its nature, however, that advice cannot take into account the particulars of your own personal situation and requirements, so you will need to take your own position into account when choosing how to proceed. Additionally, our advice is just that – advice – and you should use it simply as one ingredient in your overall decision-making process. To be clear, we cannot be held responsible for the final decision you do or don’t make in relation to a possible course of action.

Additionally, many of the videos and films communicate the views and opinions held by people who are not employees of Jericho Writers, and who do not necessarily represent our views.

If you find any material false, offensive, or hateful, please let us know as we will seek to moderate any such complaints as fast as possible.

Responsibility & governing law
These terms and conditions form the basis of a contract between you, the client, and us. We and not your editor are responsible for the proper performance of this contract, which shall be governed by English law.

Your rights & refunds
Needless to say, we will honour all of your statutory rights under all circumstances short of full-scale alien invasion and/or zombie attack.
